Posted: Fri March 14, 2003 05:27 AM UTC
Hello!
I will be travelling with my boyfriend around California and we are looking for nice and affordable places in : Joshua Tree Park, Death Valley (very important!), Gran Canyon (ok, it's not California...:-) Perhaps you have any good ideas...? We would like to enjoy the nature! Thank you so much!

Depends what you're willing to spend. Joshua Tree has no in park lodging but the city of Palm Springs is close by with a lot of hotels. There's also Desert Hot Springs which has a lot of spas. Death Valley and Grand Canyon both have lodging inside the parks. Check out www.grandcanyonlodges.com for the Grand Canyon and www.furnacecreekresort.com for Death Valley. To stay in either of these two parks you'll probably have to make reservations a few months in advance. Hope this helps!

If you want good access to Joshua Tree Nat'l Monument staying at Twenty-nine Palms or Joshua Tree are better than Palm Springs. There is NO WHERE near the style and comfort of PS but the access is better (some trails are right above town). You could stay at the dumpy motel that U2 stayed in when they made their album (The Joshua Tree), it isn't much but neither is 29 Palms. Decent places to eat and lost of military, but you have much better access to the Nat'l Monument.
Death Valley has places to stay inside the park, EXCELLENT hiking in the slot canyons but don't try it between May and September. Advance reservations are a must.

Yeah, Furnace Creek is nice but it ain't exactly a bargain at the rates they charge. All depends on your budget, if $$ aren't a big concern then by all means FC is the best place in Death Valley. Otherwise...it's expensive!

I can't remember the last time I was at a california park......

I should go to Joshua Tree Next Week and count the boulders.... I don't go there to see the cactus or yuccas.. I like the ROCKS !!! The bigger the better.. !!!!

Just came online as i'm hoping to stay in Death Valley myself in March. The above answers have helped.
Think i'll try at the Furnace Creek resort (although it sounds like it gets booked up quickly).
Thanks to all that suggested it.
