If you want good access to Joshua Tree Nat'l Monument staying at Twenty-nine Palms or Joshua Tree are better than Palm Springs. There is NO WHERE near the style and comfort of PS but the access is better (some trails are right above town). You could stay at the dumpy motel that U2 stayed in when they made their album (The Joshua Tree), it isn't much but neither is 29 Palms. Decent places to eat and lost of military, but you have much better access to the Nat'l Monument. Death Valley has places to stay inside the park, EXCELLENT hiking in the slot canyons but don't try it between May and September. Advance reservations are a must.
