Working out my itinerary
Posted: Fri March 14, 2003 02:13 AM UTC
I'm genuinely considering spending between 10 days and 2 weeks in the cities of St Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Riga and Vilnius. What would be my recommended length of stay in each, + am I missing out on anywhere else in this area?
Also being a UK national do I only need a Russian passport or do I need one for the other countries aswell? Thanks and happy VTing

UK citizens don't need visas for Estonia Latvia and Lithuania
Nor for EU countries like Sweden

So you need a visa for Russia and Beloruss if you make the mistake of going there.

Available from Russian Embassies but you will need a letter of invitation
It's easier to use an agency see www.expat.ru

Hiya,

on your described trip you would miss out Tallinn (Estonia) which is another brilliant baltic city.

I would stay either in Tallinn and in Riga at least 3-4 days.

And i am pretty sure that you donīt need a VISA for the baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).

Hope this helps

being serious, 2 weeks fo such a progamme is nothing. Moreover the distances are quite big. Only Hemitage requires 1 whole day, at least.
Maybe you should stay more in some countries & see more in details. Like it sounds, you won't realy enjoy any of them, it looks like observation from the train window.

... and moreover most of the public transportation is very slow. For example the distance between Tallinn and Riga is only about 300 km, but the bus ride takes more than 5 hours.

Hello Georgey,

I would not come back on the problem of the passports : no country is part of the union European : you need a visa by country.
For Ukraine, the visa costs 60 Euros. To visit Kiev, that is one immense city, it is necessary to foresee a minimum of 3 on 5 days. To less to cross the city quickly !
To lodge in Ukraine (it is similar in Russia), it is necessary for you to know that the comfort of the hotels is very uncertain. A 5 stars correspond to a 2 stars European. But the prices are the duplicate for the strangers that for the Ukrainian. In Kiev, I indicated in my pages of the renting of apartments, from 40 $ per day. It is the solution that I adopted for my displacements in this city.

It is necessary for you to know that St.-Petersbourg celebrates its 300 years, and that he is going to have a lot of tourists there in this city, and therefore of the prices consequently. My advice (and it is also worth for Moscow and Kiev) : the black market. The families rent their apartments to the tourists to win what to live more easily. It also permits some meetings...

There is only 1 5* hotel in Kyiv, it is 'Palace'.
I met some people who stayed there, they say it's expensive but corresponds to 5*

Lybid is 3*.
