Hi !

It is mainly a place to start activities from:
Neptun staircase is a servies of several locks in the Caledonian canal a bit outside of F.W.
There is a museum about mines on your way to Mallaig
the steamtrain "Lochaber" starts in F.W. once a week
F.W. is a good place for shopping in case that you forgot some equipment for the Highlands, where good shops are rare.
They have a lousy show with scottish music and dance with a dinner, just the way some tourists expect it.
It is the place where you may take the train to Rannoch Moore from and I may highly recommend it, take at least a return ticket to Rannoch station. For several miles you will go through wilderness without houses or streets, just with giant lakes, mountains and a few sheep...

I agree with globetrot. You could also take the steam train to mallaig and back. A very pleasant journey.

Aye, there's not much in fort william itself, but there's plenty nearby (like globetrott mentions). There's plenty of outdoors stuff too like hillwalking or climbing, but then again if you were into those, you would have already known that ;) There's also several bimbles like up glen nevis to the steel falls, or in glengoe to the lost valley, both of which still need sturdy footwear.
