It has just been brought to my attention that I may need an YHA card to be able to stay at La Primula (we've already booked it). Can anyone tell me whether I have to have a card, or whether we can just pay a few extra euros a night to stay there? Your help is much appreciated.

if you haven't got a card then you can get a so called guest card in the hostel, where you pay a couple of euros extra the first 6 nights.
after 6 nights you are a full member of the YHA hostels.

What if we are only staying 3 nights? Can we still just pay a couple of Euros extra per night per person?

yes you do.
it's a system where they put a 2 euro stamp on your card for the first 6 nights. if you only stay 3 nights you only pay 6 euro's extra.
