Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Wellington Kiwis and knowledgeable non-kiwis...help please
Posted: Thu March 13, 2003 01:54 PM UTC
Hello,

For the last couple years, I've been thinking of getting a work/holiday visa for NZ. I am still thinking about it, and who knows, maybe in a year or so, I can manage to get there.

My question is about Wellington: what are the best websites for jobs, accommodation, all around living, etc, etc. in Wellington? I figure I should start looking early so that I'm more prepared when the time comes to get there.

I will be doing other research, but advice from VTers is always helpful. In the past I had been thinking about Nelson too, but I imagine Wellington would be better for jobs. I have picked the central region of the country because of the proximity north or south, making it easier for travel. Any other suggestions?

Finally, I'm hoping by starting early I can keep in touch with some of the locals, so I have people to meet when I arrive down the road. Even without being there, I always love to talk about it!

Anyway, enough babbling. It's a long term plan, but well worth the effort...

Cheers! Brandon

Google it man! Wellington shouldn´t be hard to get a job in but the web-sites are most useful if your IT, accounting or engineering.

Hi!

Best website for jobs is www.nzjobs.co.nz. There's also www.monster.co.nz, but I don't think this has as much stuff on + I don't bother advertising on it myself when looking for staff cos it doesn't seem to get looked at as much as nzjobs. Oh, and I think jobstuff is quite good too -- it's either www.jobstuff.co.nz or is somewhere on www.nzoom.co.nz (NZ newspapers site).

However, like anywhere, most jobs go by word of mouth and never get into the paper or online. Best thing is to have enough money to last a couple of months then sign up with recruitment agencies once you're here + do some research into your job area then coldcall. Coldcalling can work really well if there happens to be a job coming up just when you appear -- I've hired coldcallers on shortterm contracts before because they turned up at a good moment and had good CVs.

I've heard that in the UK short CVs are the norm -- in NZ we tend to have longer CVs eg about 5 pages. Things like your interests are important too.

Unless you're a rich old hippy (and American -- didn't check if you were or not), or want to retire, Nelson probably won't be much fun for you! (Although it's near to lots of lovely scenery -- but so is everywhere in NZ).

What sort of work will you be looking for? Wellington is strong on IT, media, film, and of course all the government stuff.

I've gotta rush, but will try to tell you more later! Give me a yell if you want to ask anything specific in the meantime. (I live in Wellington).

:-)
