Yes, you can go from Rome to Capri and back in a day, I did it last summer. It's definitely worth going. We got the train to Naples at about 8 A.M. We were in Naples at about 10.30 a.m. We walked to the pier, it took about half an hour, and got the hydrofoil to Capri. I think that cost about 10 euro and took about 45 minutes. When you get to Capri make sure to take the bus to Anacapri, it's a little town near the highest point on the island. From there you can take a cable car to the highest point, there are some brilliant views there. From there you can see the sea arch that you may have heard about or seen in pictures. Also we went to the Blue Grotto, it's a cave under the cliffs that's really bright inside due to reflection of the sunlight or something. Locals row tourists into the cave on row boats. It's nice but if time is tight skip it in favour of the cable car ride.
