Breda Hi new to VT

Hi All,

I'm new to VT but I've been living in Breda now for 9 months. Havent learnt much Dutch yet but I did a 1yr evening course before moving here. Also looking for courses, as the only one i've found so far was 45Eur/Hour! My wife is Dutch but she cant really teach me...

I was until march working in Antwerp but now I also find myself out of work! So any tips on places non dutch speakers can find good jobs would be helpful too.

I've visited the highlights of Breda now (Irish Pub, Brooklyn, Mexican restaurant) but I'm always open for suggestions on other good places. Like where's a decent Thai and whats the curry house like? :)

Cheers,

Mark.

LOL PJ there's no escape from you.
Yes Mark, I am still around and still can be seen at the Irish bar. Don't know about Thai food but would definitely recommend you the sushi restaurant called The Fusion. It's across the road from the Irish (how convenient) :)
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

There are plenty of international companies in The Netherlands.
Unilever, Philips, Shell, etc.
A great database to check out companies is
http://www4.kompass.com/kinl/en/

(choose Netherlands from the list in the box 'Region' at the top.

Hi,

another good site with information on things to do, courses etc. (which you may have found already) is www.expatica.com.
Enjoy your stay here!

Hey,

Thanks for your replies. Good to know there are people reading this.

Thanks for the Thai food tips. Did try the Ginnekenweg one and although the people in there were nice the food was pretty bad (and I'll eat anything, well except fish so thats the sushi out as well)
They basically keep the food in plastic tubs on the counter and scoop up what you ask for and bung it in the magnetron (thats microwave, see i'm learning)
It seemed pretty random whether it was warm or not! And I wont go into the effects the next day!

Might try that other one though.

I'll look at that company site, Did actually go for an interview at Thomson in Breda(which used to be Phillips) and waiting to hear back. Not being able to speak dutch is more of a burden than I though tho.

Been to the CWI, to register with the UWV also took a trip to the KVK as well. All those acronims are making my brain hurt!

The guinness in the Irish pub is pretty good but at 4.20 eur a pint its as expensive as london! Janneke, my wife loves the rum hot chocolate. We were in there on Thursday night for her birthday. We went to Bakowski (or something like that) its pretty expensive but bloody good. Also ask for a Zombie in Brooklin (if you like rum) as its the best. Only problem is after a few you feel like a zombie the next day!

Expatica is a pretty good site and I've seen a few jobs on there over the months as well.

oops i've rambled on again...

Good to read you are finding your way around.
I just got the 2 Thai restaurant addresses from the Yellow Pages; just a gamble.
It's something I do on longer businesstrips; you can end up in a great place or ..... well you know.

Hey, I worked for Philips & Thomson too; nowadays it's Thales.

I signed up for a course at Tilburg university. It was nearly 700euros once you buy all the books. but its pretty good as its 9 hours of lectures a week and you also have 9 hours/week betweeen lectures to practice.

All the other people on the course are from all over the place so you cant get away with talking english all the time.

Went out in town last night, it was warm enough (with those mushroom heaters) to sit outside. Course, started in the Irish pub.

Anyway, I see you're having a meeting at the jazz festival. I'd come but I'm going to the UK for a long weekend then. Anyone out on Queens day? Where are the best places in Breda to go on QD?

Cheers,

Mark.

Why don't you try The Hague on the everning of April 29th? It's called Konininnenach. Lots of fun, life music all over the city, and some indoor performances too.
Ironically, I have no idea what's going on in Breda on Queens Day 'cause usually I go to bigger cities to experience the atmosphere.
This year I'm in The Hague on the 29th and if I'll still be sober enough I'll check the Grote Markt in Breda on the 30th:)
