Everyone who replied said the bad things got to them and the culture. But what are the things exactly that made you not want to be there??

Only the "Vierdaagse" (a 4 day walking event) keeps me away from Nijmegen, by car that is.
Daily life may be a little different from what you are used to (taking a bicycle to go around), but to call that negative. Every city has a shady side, but you don't have to look for that. Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands and is a great city to visit and live in. PJ

Drummergirl,
As I remember, nobody said anything negative about the Netherlands in your preveious posting. We just referred to a different culture. I (as well as member dnwitte) just suggested you to think twice before you permanenlty move to the country. Whether neagtive or positive experiences, each individual sees things differently. So why don't you just come here for a longer visit (let's say a couple of months) and see it for yourself? Nathalie

If you're going to study in the Netherlands, I wouldn't choose Amsterdam. It's a great city to visit, but to live there for 1 or 2 years, coming from USA... Might be a bit claustrofobic.. I'd choose a city in the east side of the country to sort of ease your way into the country!
Good luck!!

Hi,,
Also read the earlier thread - I'd say it's very personal how you find the Netherlands to live in and how you experience the Dutch way of living. Being a mixed Dutch-foreign (Latvian) couple and having friends with a similar background (some also from the US) we can say we also know of some mixed experiences! I think it's wise to follow Nathalie's advice and first live here for some weeks, look around in several (University, college) towns and then decide. And share some experiences with fellow "expats", for example on www.expatica.com. When deciding to study here we'd recommend looking for a University in a somewhat smaller town with international courses and students, for example Wageningen, Maastricht or Nijmegen. Probably easier to meet and mix with people from both Dutch and international background here! Good luck! P.
