Hola!
I am going to be in Santander in May and want to see the mountains.
Is there a day tour from Santander to Fuente De?
How difficult is the road and how long it takes to get there by car from Santander?

Mucha gracias,

We found plenty to see in Santander and you can see the mountains without leaving the city. But I am sure close to they will be great, like the city. Enjoy

Thanks, Chris!
I am sure we'll enjoy the area.
When I saw pictures of cable car at Fuente De, it just got me!
I have to get on this cable car!
Take care!
Aatel

Can't remember how long the road takes, but it'll only be a couple/few hours I am sure. No idea if there is a day trip offered, but it's highly likely, as it's not so far away and a fairly popular destination around there. I've done it on both motorbike and car, and it's not a hard road at all- the roads around there are wonderful. All very smooth and in good condition. The scenery is FANTASTIC.

I am not a fan of Santander, I far prefer Bilbao, but the region is absolutely wonderful and shall be there in May myself, in fact I am looking to move somewhere down that way, perhaps Bilbao. If you see a chunky guy on a UK registered big, silver motorbike, give him a wave! I should probably wave back.

I may even pluck up the courage to go up in the cable car this year, I've been to foot of it and looked up and as yet been too chicken. Gulp.

Have fun, Jem

Hi, Jem

Thanks for response.
I'm sure roads are fine, it's more for my wife's peace. She gets nervous on the mountain roads and cable car is out of question for her. But I'am getting on it. I'll wave "every chunky guy on UK bike", just in case, not to miss you.

Cheers,
alweis

Hi,
the road to Fuente De is OK. From Santander to Unquera (exit Unquera/Panes/Potes or alike, well signaled) it is a new (1-2 years) highway paralell to the sea. From Panes to Potes it gets a bit narrower but it is still good (and little traffic) on the part known as "desfiladero de la Hermida". Then from Potes toward Fuente De is again broad.

If the weather is clear, cable car is great fun and the views from above on Picos de Europa really beautiful.

I guess there is a day excursion there, but can not tell you which companies might organize it.
These webs might be helpful:

http://english.turismodecantabria.com/

Enjoy it.

I know the area pretty well as I live in the region.
Definitely, I would rent a car. There might be buses from Santander
stopping in Torrelavega or something like that but driving to Picos the
Europa you will get the most of it. You can rent cheap (less than 30
euros per day) through ryanair's webpage and pick up the car in the
airport (very close to the city) (go to www.ryanair.com and then click
on hertz offer).

Picos the Europa has many more things to offer apart from the cable car.
The area has many litlle beautiful towns and is worth just getting lost
driving a car.
