RE: "French museum"? Posted: Sun April 10, 2005 09:13 PM UTC
Roger, I'm thinking that the British Museum has a lot more things in it than "just" art. The Louvre is more what I would call a "gallery" because it is art, not exhibits of musical instruments or natural history. I can't think of a museum like that in Paris although I certainly haven't seen every museum in Paris, but they do seem to be pretty specific, e.g., the Louvre for older art, the d'Orsay for more modern art including the famous Impressionists, the Rodin for his sculpture, the Music Museum at Villette, etc. For a completely general museum, I'm not sure there is a comparable counterpart.
There is a wonderful little paperback book about museums in Paris. It lists the museum, what it exhibits, where it is, hours, cost, Metro stop. It's pretty comprehensive. You might want to see if you could find the book or something similar. Plan what you want to see and then find the appropriate museum.
I do highly recommend the Louvre, the d'Orsay, the Rodin and the Marmatton museums. We loved the Music Museum out at Villette; it's interactive and well displayed. You will also see lots of art just walking around town. There are exhibits in parks, along the Seine and in gardens, not to mention beside and inside churches and along the streets.
It is fun searching out the different museums. I swear there is one for nearly every interest but sometimes you do have to search a bit. While it would be fun to have everything in one place, it's also a lot of fun to find "your" museum and then tell everyone about it.
Have fun.
