Departamento de Apurímac Travelling to Abancay
Posted: Sat April 9, 2005 06:16 PM UTC
Has anybody gone to Abancay to do tourism? We would like to go to Lima from Cusco via Abancay - Ayacucho - Huancayo. Since I never hear about this route being discussed in any of the forums, I am wondering if it is safe? Does anybody know? What is there to do in Abancay?

In general Apurimac has great outdoors and, atlhough you gotta take private transportation to reach there from big cities, it is safe. The only problem I could foresee is rains (still in rainy period), coldness at night and heigh illness, so if you take precautions in those points everything should be OK. A few days ago I did Huancavelica-Huancayo-Lima half by car, half by bus and, atlhough I got height illness, the gorgeous scenary made me forget my head feeling dizzy.

Flor de Maria

Three years ago my son did this route Cusco to Lima. Other than poor roads and a series of bus breakdowns that stretched the travel time between Cusco and Ayuchucho to 36 hours he enjoyed the journey and his only regret was not planning more time for the towns along the way. This is an area with a violent history but my son saw no evidence of a secruity risk when he traveled, and I have not read of any special problems since.
