Ceske Budejovice Where to Stay in Ceske Budejovice?
Posted: Fri April 8, 2005 07:08 PM UTC
Hi,

I'm planning an overnight stop in Ceske Budejovice in late May. I've been trying to book a hotel/pension online, and am having problems finding online information about the Garni Hotel, KIT. The booking sites don't even seem to have an address listed (aside from assurances that it is central.) Has anyone stayed there? Can anyone recommend it? If not, what are some better options?

Thanks,

Jen

Hi,
Great choice of place to visit. I arrived there by mistake on a missed connection on a train journey from Ceske Krumlov to Brno on a Sunday last August - don't try travelling on a Sunday!
The international east european express from Prague to Budapest train stops there. There is a superabundance of hotels there is also a state run hotel booking office in the station. It was unfortunately shut on Sunday evening and I booked into a forbidding looking hotel opposite the station (the station hotel). It was gruesome, so foul that it was worth staying for the tales of woe that i was able to tell afterwards. The architecture around the station is grim, cold war brutalist. I only realised later that the old town was but an 8/10 minute walk away and it was truly delightful. Most places are calm on a Sunday evening but this had a lyrical tranquility. A well maintained town that had it roots in medieval architecture. It has one of the largest town plazas in E Europe which are surrounded by numerous hotels, 3star c50$'s - do try to stay there. The river snakes in a serpentine fashion round the old town. There are few western tourists, and the restaurants on the square. One of the penalties of staying there is that not as many speak English, but if you have a smattering of German you can get by with nearly everybody. There was a conservatoire and more than a nod to art and culture. Book one night in any hotel on the square, there was only one iffy looking one and you'd have to be unlucky to book that one - but think of the tales you could tell!

Here's a map of the place. Can't offer any opinion of the place though as I've never been there.
