Detroit
Mediterranean/North African community

I am going to Detroit for business but I'll have one afternoon and evening to myself to explore. My husband is from Algeria and I've heard there's a large arabic community in Detroit. He is planning on coming with me on the trip so he'll also have extra time to wander while I'm working. Where can we go to shop for special ingredients, books, music etc from his home? Also, I'm seeing such horrible things on everyone's pages about Detroit. We have a one year son who will be traveling with us. Should I be afraid, extra cautious or both?

Most of the Arabic business are in East Dearborn which is a suburb just west of Detroit. As far as I remember, Warren Road east of Schaefer has a high concentration, but there are many scattered throughout Dearborn. There is no train and I wouldn't recommend taking a bus there, so a car is your best bet and it's generally safe but take precautions as you would anywhere. Unless things have changed, one of the best restaurants there as far as authentic is Cedarland, which is on Warren Road, where, for the money, it was awesome. Enjoy your trip!

Detroit is just like every other major city, stick to the main roads and you'll be fine. Most of the population, grocery stores, and places to see are in the suburbs except for the opera, symphony, art, science, and historical museums. You will need to rent a car, as there isn't much public transportation at all. I agree that Cedarland is a great restaurant. La Shish is a local chain that has PHENOMENAL hummos and Tabouli salads, and they have a website for locations.. La Shish Website. I'm not sure what the best grocers are for mediterranian ingredients, but you will surely find something in Dearborn. I really haven't seen many "touristy" shops for things of Arabic nature, but you may find what you're looking for along Warren Avenue.
