Saint John Ferries to St. John?
Posted: Tue April 5, 2005 07:14 PM UTC
We are travelling from Canada to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. There is no direct flight to get there. We heard there are ferries that go there from places like Aruba and Puerto Rico... is this fact? If yes, where would we go to find out specific schedules & costs, etc.?

Please help!

Thanks :)

That's the problem. The carrier I would be taking doesn't fly to the USVI...

LOL! Fair enough question. The whole point is that I am trying to get one of our tickets for free on points with Air Canada; they do fly to Aruba, and that's why I wanted to see if there is a ferry from Aruba to St. John, because I heard there was... or perhaps a ferry from Aruba to St. Thomas, and then we could ferry from St. Thomas to St. John. I have a feeling we will probably end up having to pay for both air fares as opposed to only one...

Air canada is partners with United Airlines and you can get a ticket with them. They go to Saint Thomas. Aeroplan can help you better than they have

Ok, that's good to know, thanks! Another question for you... what is the best time of year to go there weather wise?
Also, is crime that horrible in St. John?

Ok...first things first.

St. John is a VERY (must I repeat myself) VERY safe island to visit. I have never had a problem in St. John to the point that I leave my car windows down and doors unlocked while visiting the beach. Never even had anyone rummage through the vehicle. We have traveled to St. John 4 times. My last trip was January 2002. Worst problems I have ever encountered are from the sand fleas or no see ums or whatever the heck they were.

Second, You can catch a ferry to St. John from:

St. Thomas (Redhook on the hour from 6am to midnight or charlotte amalie every two hours from 9 am to 5:30pm)

Virgin Gorda BVI once per day

Tortola 5 times per day 9 am to 5:30

Fajardo, Puerto Rico once every other friday.

Go to this website for more details: http://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry

I would highly recommend St. John to anyone BUT I would caution you about staying on St. Thomas. I have however taken day trips to Virgin Gorda and I absolutely love it. I cannot however comment on safety on V.G. as I have only been there for daylight hours. I did feel very secure while there though.

I hope this helps.

I typicaly visit St. John and the caribbean the first week of December. I have found that it is still off season but out of traditional hurricane season. My last visit was in January. I have always found St. John weather to be wonderful. You can find temps in the 90's on the beach and at the same time temps as low as 60's at higher elevations. Always windows open, top down kinda weather.
I would suggest you repost this new question so as to get a few new perspectives on this.

Crime is a problem anywhere in the world you will travel. As far as crime and security, I have never had a problem on St. J. St. Thomas is a different story. Find the local newspaper online and read to see what kind of crime problems make it to print. Try this website and check out the Police Log section.
