Kaohsiung moving to kaohsiung

hullo everyone.

i'm moving to Kaohsiung at the start of May to teach english. i have a few questions!

1. if anyone else has taught english in Kaohsiung how was it? What kind of hours were you working? What were the other staff like? Which companies do you recommend, and who should i steer clear of?

2. I'm an artist, so any information on local art galleries, artists, classes would be wonderful.

3. Is vegetarian food easy to find?

4. I dont speak any chinese or taiwanese! i do plan to learn though. Are there any recommendable chinese classes/adult schools for beginners?

5. Are there many local haunts where english speaking people can hang out at?

any information or tips would be very much appreciated.
cheers.

Hi Amelia Welcom to Kaohsiung.
I'd give you links of some teaching oppourtunities in Kaohsiung.
first one is access kaohsiung: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/accesskaohsiung/
I am a volunteer there, it's around 20 mins from the train station, click on it for the address and more info.
another site is kaohsiung_bulletin: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kaohsiung_Bulletin/
People in the sties provides teaching jobs/subs/roomates/etc...might be a good way to get to know the city.
AS ur questions above, the answers might be various. but basically they say it's 'easy money, easy job." and there're quite a few galleries coming every month in the art museum, would be a good choice to look at. there's also a movie museum where you get a free movie every evening =)
Vegetarian food should not be hard to find since i found 2 near to where i live. but not sure if yuo find them tasty. TLI provides good chinese lessons and my college (wenzao) provides chinese lessons as well. http://www.wtuc.edu.tw/ccl/
Finally I guess there're quite a few foreigners living in Kaohsiung and it's easy to find them in pubs or sport fields.

Take care and hope to see you in kaohsiung :)
you can come to the english information center near Lotus Lake.

-ACCESS KAOHSIUNG-
English Information Center hosted by the Kaohsiung City Government, Bureau of Human Resources and Development, 801 Chongde Road, Tsoying District. Come check it out! We also send e-mails regarding jobs, items wanted and for sale, and information.
