| Tverskaya Oblast' | name of a village near Klin Posted: Tue April 5, 2005 09:25 AM UTC
I'm translating a novel from French into Italian and I have to translate a name that's written "Koussinovo" in French. I'd need to know what the original Russian form is, in order to write this name according to the Italian rules of transcription.
I'd appreciate very much if anybody could tell me how this name is written, in Russian, Latin alphabet of both. Thank you! |

Great! Spassiba! Thank you very much! The Italian form is exactly Kuvsinovo. These French always change foreign names in order to pronounce them better...

Actually, I've read again my novel and it says that "Koussinovo" lies not far from Klin (I've found that Kuvshinovo is almost 200 kms far from Klin) and less than 100 versts far from Moscow. So, I'm still in doubt. Either the author has changed the distances or there is another village with a similar name.

So I do not know. By the way, the town of Klin is in the Moscow region (Moskovskaya oblast), not in Tver region.

But Kuvsinovo is in Tver region. Thank you anyway. If anyone else can help, I'll be very happy.

There are 2 Kuvshinovos in Tver region (Kuvshinovsky and Rzhevsky districts), another 2 in Vologda region and one in Moscow region (Zaraysky district).
Here http://maps.yandex.ru/search.xml?text=%EA%F3%E2%F8 you will find the links to the maps of all of them (if you read a bit of Russian you will manage), including Kuvshinovo in Moscow region http://maps.yandex.ru/map.xml?mapID=1&size=1&a Good luck!

I also forgot to mention that 'not far' is very different on Russian and European standards. :-)

Thank you for the help. If there are many villages with the same name, mine is among them. I was only interested in the translation.
It's true that 200 kms aren't a big distance in Russia but "my" Kuvshinovo must be really close to Klin, since the characters often go there.

Why haven't you use VT for search?
http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/l/0/?s=Kuvshi There are 10 destinations, 3 are in Tver' region. The biggest Kuvshinovo is half way from Tver' to the Lake Seliger - one of the most popular hiking destinations in Central Russia. It is about 100 km from Tver'. Here is short history of the place: http://www.mojgorod.ru/tversk_obl/kuvshinovo/index.html "Village Kamenskoe was known since 1625. In 1829 paper works was founded there by V.P.Musin-Pushkin. Enterprise was bought in 1870-s by M.Kuvshinov. In 1910 railway station appeared 10 km from the place and was named Kuvshinovo. Later on workers settlement around the station took up the village. In 1938 place got status of a town." Though your Kuvshinovo could be renamed several times during XX c. What time that story was written? Cheers, Pavel

It doesn't matter, since the novel is set in 1917.
