La Línea de la Concepción La Chicota Bar
Posted: Mon April 4, 2005 02:19 AM UTC
Hi,

Several years ago a friend took me to a bar in La Linea which was, I believe, called La Chicota. I can remember my first time inside it, totally amazed by the fact that virtually every square inch of wall space was covered by pictures and paintings of, and photos of re-enactments of the Crucifiction.

He told me that the name of the bar was derived from a yearly religious procession, but I cannot remember the specifics. Can anyone please tell me more about the bar - photos would be great!

Thanks,
ndb.

Hello, It is an amazing little bar isn't it? I live in La Linea but have only been in this bar once - you might think this strange but it gives me the creeps! The procession you speak of is at Easter when various Societies known as Brotherhoods carry enormously heavy floats decorated with statues of the Crucifixion, the Virgin Mary and religious pictures and flowers through the town. It is quite something to see. Everyone lines the streets and although it is supposed to be a solemn occasion there is a party atmosphere too. Well the Spaniards love a party don't they! This year I was informed by a Spaniard standing beside me watching that they have "allowed" women to participate so I suppose there must be a Sisterhood! I'm sorry I cannot tell you anymore about the bar but I have a good friend who loves going there and I will ask her if she has any information that might be of interest to you. Best wishes Diana

Hi Diana,

Thanks for your response. I have to agree, I also found it very disturbing - all the photographs of guys in white capes and pointy hats made me think of the KKK initially!

The friend who took me is a local, and he gave me the impression that it was an honour to be in there, as if you really need to be accepted to enter.

Thinking some more about it, I seem to recall something about the meaning of La Chicota. I think it may have something to do with the action of the men who carry the float, specifically about the movement they make when they crouch to lift the float, having laid it down outside the bar to go inside and have a drink.

Hopefully it won't be too long until I return!
Best wishes,
ndb
