Well, I am not exactly your demographic, but I would say Nicosia is at least as safe and probably quite a bit safer than most major cities for you. English is widely spoken and there are lots of expats and tourists about in the central areas.

Hi,
You will not have a problem in Nicosia. Inside the walled part there is a Next and Woolworths in the main street leading up to no mans land area which is a corridor were the UN patrol. Also Woolworths as a tower were you can view the Turkish side and there is a view part were you can look into the past 1974.
To right going to the main st there are narrow streets with a lot of craft shops selling lace etc.
Outside the walled part of the city there are also designer shops.
Any one going to Cyprus Nicosia is a must.
I hope you enjoy your visit Michael

Hello

You will be fine in Nicosia on your own for a few hours. Inside the walls are some friendly cafe's and tavernas, and cutesy type shops. Also the museum and interesting venetian walls if you like history.

Outside the walls Makarios Avenue area has fab designer shops (if thats your thing -its mine!)

Almost everyone speaks English.

My only concern would be depending on the time of year - Nicosia is unpleasantly hot and humid in July/August.

Please dont hesitate to email me if I can be of any more help :)
