My wife and I will be in Bacharach the first week of May. We plan to spend 4 days there. Are there any interesting things to do in this area?
Are there any special events that week?

Do a trip on a boat down the Rhine to Koblenz. This part of the Rhine-valley was declared a world heritage by the UNESCO. If you keep your eyes open you'll see a lot of interesting towns and castles you might want to visit. And Koblenz itself is an interesting city.

Lucky you! Bacharach is in my opinion the nicest town along the Rhine - less touristy than St Goar and with more prettyness than Boppard for instance.

I second a cruise on the Rhine through the Gorge and Loreley cliff. Loads of castles on the hills indeed. If you have/rent a car, you can drive along the river too and actually visit the castles.

Rüdesheim is touristy but you get good views of the river if you go on a cable car ride above the vineyards there.

Bacharach is also not too far from Wiesbaden which I haven't visited but I once had a colleague from there who said I should :))) You might have to change trains in Mainz for that, or at least cross the river to Rüdesheim, I'm not sure.

In the middle of the Rhine just outside Bacharach is Pfalz Castle, an old toll fortress. Again, I think you have to cross the river for the boat trips to it...
