minneapolis advice Posted: Sun March 27, 2005 06:54 PM UTC
My wife and I were thinking about visiting the mall of America and also taking in a Twins baseball game in late July.
Questions,
What is the distance between these two and how easy is it to travel between them?
Any ideas on hotels [location]?
Any other info or ideas would be much appreciated.

You don't say how you are getting around the Twin Cities. People tend to drive (rent a car) in Minneapolis/Saint Paul. The Twins play at Hubert Humphrey Metrodome (at one end of downtown). The Mall is 11 miles away (15 minutes drive).
If you are taking public tranportation, there is a new rapid transit line to the Mall of America. I have not been to the Twin Cities since it has been completed.
There are 100's of hotels in the Twin Cities. Hard to recommend one. When we reserved, we checked out the available hotels on the VT website, and reserved from there. One thing you have to be aware is that there are many cities that make up the Twin Cities, and not all Twin Cities hotel/motels will necessarily be in Minneapolis or Saint Paul.

The Mall of America and the Hubert H. Metrodome are about 10 miles apart. You could stay in a hotel near the Mall or downtown Minneapolis. There is a light rail train(LRT) that connects the Mall of America, the airport and downtown, with a stop at the Metrodome.
I would lean more towards downtown Minneapolis as a place to stay. Good hotel options are the Hilton, Hyatt Regency, Marquette, Marriot and Grand Hotel. All are within walking distance of the Metrodome and the LRT line.
If you have any questions feel free to aks me.

As far as getting between the Mall of America and the Metrodome there is no better way than the LRT. Even if you are renting a car, which you don't need if you're just going to visit the MOA and Downtown Minneapolis, THE BEST way to go is the LRT. People who live in the suburbs will drive out of their way to a park and ride to go to a Twins or Vikings game because it's so much easier than driving Downtown and parking there. The Metrodome stop is right at the door of the stadium. It takes maybe 20-25 minutes to go from MOA to Downtown.
If you get a hotel around the airport there will most certainly be a free shuttle between it and the MOA (note, the shuttle may not be 24 hours so if you're coming back to your hotel late you may not have a ride from MOA to your hotel), but if you stay downtown you'll be closer to the action. I actually prefer Uptown Minneapolis to Downtown. If you get off the LRT at the Lake St. station and take the 21 bus west all the way to the end of the line you'll be in Uptown (from LRT station to end of the line about 15 minutes). The LRT runs basically north-south with downtown being at the north and MOA at the south, so that gives you some orientation as to where you'd catch the 21. Also, your bus will have Uptown on the display in front.
If you like Mexican food there's a place called Pineda Tacos that's in an old Pizza Hut building right near the bus stop. They have awesome burritos and they're pretty cheap. This is where you'll find the local Mexican population catching a bite to eat. If you want more info on the LRT and buses I have a link to Metro Transit and some more info on my Minneapolis site. Win Twins!

Definitely take the light rail. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes though. It is definitely the most time saving way to travel in minneapolis. If you ever get a chance, take the rail downtown and check out some of the shops if you're willing to walf around. The light rail also connects to the airport also so if you're flying, don't take the taxi cuz its a rip off! For about $2 your light rail ticket is good for about 2 1/2 hours so take advantage of it if you can. There are tons of hotels by the mall. I would chack hotwire.com for the best hotel prices. It doesn't tell you the hotel name but it tells you how many stars it is. I've lived in this area all my life and there are tons of good restaurants if you get off the lightrail at the Nicollet Mall stop (which is the area where Orchestra hall, Neiman Marcus, Saks outlet and tons of other stores are) and if you're willing to walk a bit (like along Marquette or Washington Ave.) There s also this crazy looking store called the Twins Museum thats about two blocks down from the metrodome but I've never been in it. Whatever you do, don't stay downtown unless if you're willing to cough up a couple hundred dollars just because its convenient. It is best to stay in the hotels by the Mall of America. If you want to stay downtown, there is a nice big fancy Hilton, The Grand Hotel-Minneapolis, The Marquette, and the not as fancy: a Marriot and a Radisson.
