Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Madagascar Advise about north & south Madagascar and Masoala/Nosy Mangabe
Posted: Sat March 26, 2005 06:18 AM UTC
After a wonderful trip last yeat in april we are getting back to Madagascar again in May. This time we want to visit the far south (Fort Dauphin) and then fly back to Tana and from there on to Diego Suarez. From there we want to go to Montange d'Ambre, Tsingy D'Ankarana and on to Nosy Be.

Some questions

- Any recommendations for the area Fort Dauphin? (Id like to see Berenty but it very expensive (with obliged transport). Instead we want to visit NP Andohahela. Anyone been there?
- Has anyone got experiences with travelling from Diego to Nosy Be? (ie renting a driver, taxi brousse? How long does it take?)
- Will we need our own camping equipment for Andohahela or Tsingy? Or can it be rented or wont camping be necessary?
- If i have time left id like to visit Masoalo Peninsula. Any tips about getting there or recommendations?
- Any Nosy Be recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Hoi,
We went to Madagascar oct/nov 2003. Two nights Berenty + transport costed us 300 euro's. Food there about 50 euro (2 persons) a day. But the sifaka's jumping so close by, while we were having breakfast...whow and we saw a lot of other animals.
Andohahela was the most beautiful spot we have seen in Madagascar. We did one walk, 2 or 3 hours. If you want to see more of it, you would have to bring a tent. I don't think you can get one in Fort Dauphin.
From Diego we went directly to Joffreville (near Montagne d'Ambre) by taxi 45 minutes. From there to Ankarana was (taxi) about 4 hours, but our driver was about 80 years and the renault 4 not much younger.
In Ankarana there are very simple bungalows, and I heared you can rent a tent there if you want to. (We did a nice walk here, but I liked the scenery at the Tsingy de Bemaraha more).
From there the guides (very organised there) stopped a 4x4 that gave us a lift to Ambanja (3 uur). The boatride from there was nice.
Nosy Be disappointed us. Totally different atmosphere than on the main Island.
A lot of grumpy europeans there. But beautiful snorkeling at Tanikely.

Andohahela is divided in three area's. The rainforest was only available by 4x4 (very expensive) and the spiny forest was even more difficult to reach (by foot only).
So we went with a local taxi to Tsimelahy, the transitional forest, and made a beautiful walk. About 3 hours to get there, 2 hours walking and 3 hours back. If you want to see more of it, you must bring a tent (and food and water). It is one hour walking to the campingsite and very hot.

The North , Ankarana and Montagne d'Ambre is marvellous place , Nosy be is good but the most expensive place in Madagascar , I went to Nosy Tanikely for a day trip ,and 3 days in Nosy Iranja .
Andohahela is worth 2 nights visit but camping.
You don't need to book a transport in advance ,at the village de petit bonheur
is quite reasonable price .
In ANTSIRANANA , the best guide is Théo , we booked our tour by Mr Michel.
