How long to stay in Luang Prabang?
Posted: Thu March 24, 2005 05:24 AM UTC
I am flying in from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang but with the airline schedules it means I either stay 4 nights (which seems a bit short) or 6 nights which seems a bit too long but not long enough to travel elsewhere.
Can anyone suggest which way to go or if it is feasable to spend a night or two somewhere farily easy to reach nearby?
Thanks.

Four nights would be enough for you to see mostly everything in Luang Prabang and the immediate vicinity. It's a very small city actually. Six would be good if you find some interesting full day trips/treks outside town, so you may want to research that before you leave. I believe you could do a full day trip to the plain of jars (via local flight), which may be a worthwhile excursion. I personally haven't done that though.

4-6 days aren't too long for Luang Prabang. It's a great town to relax and there are enough nearby day excursions for places to visit (Koung Si or Tad Se waterfalls, Pak Ou Caves, overnight nearby village treks). You could also make a several days journey to the scenic Moung Ngoi or Nong Khiaw villages northeast of Luang Prabang. Very nice river journey from Nong Khiaw to Moung Ngoi with multiple morning departures from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw by local bus or songthaew.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice.
Since doing a little more research I think that I will try to stay longer and do a couple of excursions.
I have read that you can go by river about 4 hours north up towards PakBeng village and across to an Elephant Coservation camp which could be good!
Cheers,
Kerrie

Hi all,
Just for the record i ended up doing 2 nights in Vientiane and 4 nights in Luang Prabang - it was perfect.
Time to see the main sights in town and 2 day trips one by road to the Xiang Si waterfalls well worth the trip. Beautiful green water and freezing cold.
Keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful tiger near the entry and the group of bears including the cutest baby. All rescued from poachers and supported by donations.
Secondly to the Pak Ou cave - OK but ....
