Almaty Moving to ALMATY / How is it to live there
Posted: Thu March 17, 2005 12:37 PM UTC
We are a Danish/Dutch family with 2 small girls who are maybe moving to ALMATY for some years (expat). We would like to get in contact with other expats which would give us useful information how it is to live there with kids etc.

Kindly mail to Fam. Kaas., email (KKR@CATTINAIR.COM)

You might like to check this site for expats living in Almaty.
http://expat.nursat.kz/

We visited American friends who were living there with their 2 sons (11 and 16) a while back. Generally they were very satisfied with their life there, though for the older boy schooling was a bit of a problem because there were not too many other kids his age - the younger boy was fine. There is a big expat community there with lots going on.

I lived there for a while. I love Almaty. Children went to the public school since they picked up language very easily. They did very well, and learned a lot. Now both of them are at Harvard... so schooling is good.
Good luck

I decided to tell you a little more about the schools and the city. Schools-- I have experience with schools # 15 and #120. Schools don't have names, they have numbers. Those two are good. There are private schools in addition to public. I have heard they were very good., but a little expensive.
Almaty itself is a paradox. City with some districts that never changed from the beginning of the 20 century, with only cold water in the house, and old houses... and then metropolitan Almaty... highrise appartment and office buildings, that are not very different from those in big cities anywhere else in the world.
And then there are mountains. Lots of people hike. Montains around Almaty are beautiful. Unbelievably beautiful. There are lots of very inexpensive resorts... you can go for a weekend, or a whole summer. There also are camps for the kids. sort of like scout camps... kids get a chance to live with other kids for 2 weeks, hike, play sports, learn to be independent....
Anyway, I hope as little as this is, still helps.
Good luck
