Groningen Groningen: Buying a Ballgown?
Posted: Tue March 15, 2005 01:20 PM UTC
I know this might sound like a weird question, but I've never attended a '"Black tie code Ball" before, and need to buy a ballgown- does anyone know of any shops in Groningen that sell this type of clothes?

Although I certainly don't want to put you off buying or renting a ball gown, it may be good to know that in The Netherlands, as a woman, you can be quite relaxed about your attire. Black tie these days does not automatically presume that the lady has to wear a ball gown. Your dress, makeup, shoes and hair should be festive but your dress doesn't necessarily have to be long. It could be a very nice cocktail dress (little black dress perhaps).
In general Dutch people tend to underdress. Personally I find that a pity, but if you're too overdressed you won't be comfortable either.
I have a few black tie events each year and I usually combine very wide black trousers of some nice flowing fabric with a top (I have several), some shiny jewelry and festive shoes (for instance high heels or silver). Easy to wear and not expensive.
I'm not sure which country you are from (I'd have to go back and see!) but if you have some unusual national costume thing (like Indian people have sari's), you could wear that. I also often wear a festive Indonesian sarong with a bit of gold in the batik fabric. That would get you lots of compliments!
I hope you get my drift.

Best advice: before you dig deep in your pocket, if possible enquire with other female guests what they are wearing, then decide if you want a ball gown or something a little simpler.

HI everyone!
Thanks for all your tips, especially ATLC> Kinda relaxed me about the whole thing. I didn't bring any national clothes with me (Not indian, but do have a nice sari back home..shame!)
I do have some nice tops which I can wear with trousers
Thanks again (And I'll still go peek at the gown providers tomorrow just out of curiousity :o) )
