Arequipa Longer trip to Colca Canyon- Is it possible?
Posted: Tue March 15, 2005 12:15 PM UTC
Hi!
We are two females coming to Arequipa somnetime in July. I have mostly seen 2 days trips to the canyon & I guess most do not take you in the canyon, mostly to the edge for the condor watching thing.
Are there agancies in Arequipa who can take us to the canyon via the usual (the hot spings etc...) but for a bit longer like 3 days or maybe 4, and maybe to explore the canyon a bit further?

We don't really want to do it indenpendently due to concern about our safety (2 women alone in middle of nowhere, no way) Any tips welcomed!

Arequipa RE: Longer trip to Colca Canyon- Is it possible?

Yes.
This is specific:

Go to the Colonial House Inn (Calle Puente Grau 114.Cercado). Stand in front of the entrance facing the street and turn right and walk to the end of the block. on the corner there is a travel agency. go in there and ask them if you can book a tour to the Colca Canyon with Remigio Castro as your guide. It has to be Remigio Castro as he is the only guide that is allowed to go into and stay in one particular village called Furre which is below an enchanted waterfall. Unless you go by yourself, this is the only way you can see the waterfall, and finding it is probably not so easy.

I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the agency but they are the ones that set us up with this tour and you can take 3-4 days. after Furre, you go to the Oasis where all the other tours go. The walk from the canyon rim to Furre is really long. we spent 2 nights in the canyon, but if you spend 3 or 4 nights there, you won't have to hike so long. Remigio is the best guide i've had ever anywhere so i hope you can find him. i hope that the agency i told you about still exists and is in the location that i named (i was there in 2002 and things change).

I hope it works. More questions, try me at finesilver@gmail.com as i don't check this one very much.

Hi Adeline,

Did you manage to find the place? What does the tour entail? I would deeply appreciate if you could give me more details! :)

Thanks!

No did not use tip above as it take too late for us. We used a guide as provided by the hostel el indio dormido in Arequipa. It was cheap and chearful and very enjoyable.
