Short visit to Venice...what to see
Posted: Fri March 11, 2005 12:50 AM UTC
We are traveling to Venice in June but will only have the evening which we arrrive (5pm) and the following day. We have already booked a boat tour to Murano which takes off at 2pm. What will I have time to see before then? Any advise?

Go to the Piazza San Marco as there are a lot of attractions in close proximity. Have coffee or hot chocolate at Florian. Go into the Basilica which is free. You could also get to the Palazzo Ducale and take a self-guided tour. I would reckon you could do all this and still get to your 2pm tour.

A lot depends on what your interests are (shopping, art, etc.).

When you do the things in the previous answer, you'll have seen some of the tourist highlights of Venice, but Venice deserves more than that. The evening of your arrival, just walk in some of the lesser known areas like Castello to have at least a glimpse of the real Venice.
You can have a look at some of the Venice pages that have been built here to get some ideas.

Unless you've already paid for your Murana trip, I'd go to the island of Burano instead - it's much prettier, and a bit less touristy.

Unless you're really really into Murano glass and are expecting to buy a lot of it on the tour (they'll pressure you, most likely) I recommend you cancel the tour. You can take a vaporetto (water bus) to Murano and walk around on your own. I've heard many, many disappointed and frustrated stories from those who have taken paid Murano tours. They realize afterward that it was unnecessary; they could have seen the same and more on their own, for free (well, for the cost of a vaporetto ride).

Buy a 24-hour or 48-hour vaporetto pass so that you can get on and off as you please. If you like, you can take the vaporetto to Murano, Burano, the Lido, and even tiny Torcello. But more importantly you can use it to get you around Venice proper. Visit the San Marco area and go into the Basilica San Marco. Visit the Doge's palace. Get across the Grand Canal to the little island of San Giorgio Maggiore and go up in the campanile there for an incredible view of Venice. A better view than St. Mark's campanile, many say. I would agree. Other than that, just walk around and don't be afraid to get lost. That's part of the joy and fun of Venice; you're on a safe string of islands conncected by bridges. You can get lost, but not THAT lost. You can always find your way back to the main canals and catch a vaporetto home. I'd also recommend a sunset from the Rialto bridge. Wonderful!

Cheers,
Marisa (and Dino)

I agree with the previous posts about Murano. Be careful of tours to the glass factories. Many of the tours will take you to sub-standard places that will really put the pressure on you to buy from them. I have actually seen some of the tour groups blocked from leaving the sales floor. If your heart is set on Murano take the vaporetti. Check out my Travel Pages if you are looking for collectable Murano Glass (Particularly the Warnings)

ditto to the last two postings especially. I enjoy staying on Murano - a realy homely peaceful place at night but Burano is much more picturesque. Some great tips here on VT so check out those pages and good tips.

I agree with the water bus idea, we used it for several rides and also to just get a general overview of the architecture..it is slow enough that you can get a glimpse of the homes and buildings and then Venice is small enough to walk to all the places.
As for Murano and Burano, if you do not plan on purchasing, skip it unless you want to see the demonstrations on glass blowing, but then you need to check the hours and it is less expensive taking the regular water taxi rather than a guided tour.
Whatever have fun, it is a fascinating place.
