Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Arnhem Airborne Museum & Oosterbeek
Posted: Wed March 9, 2005 09:21 AM UTC

I'll be travelling from Amsterdam to Nijmegen next week and want to stop off at Arnhem on the way. I would like to see the Airborne Museum and look around Oosterbeek.

How much time should I allow for this ? All day, or will a couple of hours be enough ?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Although you could only take a few hours, I suggest you spend a day in Arnhem/Oosterbeek and enjoy it fully. I was in Arnhem a few months ago with a friend whose father had been at the 'bridge', and spent the morning visiting the Arnhem War Museum (which, I recommend highly - the collection, in an old school house, is fascinating, and a personal guide provides in depth information/facts about the collection, if you wish). One could actually spend several hours in the museum itself. See this site for basic info:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~airborne/new/museum/awm.htm

We then went to the bridge, walked around a bit, subsequently had a great dinner in the center of Arnhem, and finally wandered around having drinks for the rest of the evening ;-).

Without even going to Oosterbeek, we enjoyably filled up a full day.

Enjoy,
Robin Linda

For Oosterbeek (where I spent all my high school years) and the Airborne museum you can allow just a few hours. Oosterbeek is really a delightful place to visit if you have a bike or time for a good hike in the lovely forests and heaths around the place. It's a village with lots of villa's but all set quite wide apart. The walk from station to museum will give you enough impression.

Taking the train from Amsterdam, you can stop off at Oosterbeek. After your visit the train takes you to Arnhem in 5 minutes (although you must allow 10-15 minutes walk from Oosterbeek station to the museum).

Now you can spend the rest of the day in Arnhem easily!

If you are travelling by car, I can make some more suggestions. Let me know.

Hi,

if you stay all day (or even longer) you may also see some other interesting sights in the area, for example the National Park "Hoge Veluwe" with the Kröller Müller museum (www.kmm.nl) north of Oosterbeek, the open air museum ("Openluchtmuseum") and/or next door Burger's Zoo, with its huge indoor waterworld, desert and jungle - these aare both in Arnhem. Also interesting to tvisit some places where they shot the movie "A Bridge too Far", for example the town of Deventer or the Rhederoord Estate just outside Arnhem (www. rhederoord.nl, the site is only in Dutch).
Have a good trip!
P.

Hello Kevin,

Very nice that you want to visit the museum about the dramatic historic events that took place around and in Arnhem.

From the station you take bus number 1 in the direction towards "Oosterbeek", which is a somewhat strange stop that is outside the main bus station along the Utrechtse straat (ask someone, most people will be helpful). The bus takes about 20 minutes to the museum and if you ask the driver to mark when coming up to the museum, he will help you out at the right place.

A good impression of the museum takes about two to three hours. Including the busdrives it means you are busy for a morning or afternoon.

Also interesting is visiting the town centre of Arnhem and go up in the Eusebius tower to enjoy the view over the town and the former battlefields. The view includes - of course - the famous Bridge too far. In the neighborhood there are some more monuments, but the cemetry is in Oosterbeek in a rather desolate place if it comes to public transport.

Let me know when you are in Arnhem, maybe we can make an arrangement and I could help you out visiting these places. Well, if you would like that.

If more information is necessary, see my Oosterbeek page:

Best regards and maybe see you,

Thanks to everybody for all the replies. In the end I only had time for a hectic afternoon in Arnhem , but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't see everything - the museum in Oosterbeek, the St Eusebius church and, of course, the famous bridge - so I'll have to go back ! :)

Arnhem is a great place and I'm looking forward to adding my own Arnhem page.

Thanks again,
Kevin
