bringing a camera to Rio Posted: Fri March 4, 2005 04:09 PM UTC
I've been reading some of the tips on traveling to Rio (what to bring, what not to bring, etc.), and some people have suggested bringing only a digital or disposable camera and leaving the big, more expensive SLR at home. I was planning on bringing both an SLR and my digicam in hopes of taking some gorgeous shots of Rio, and I also prefer film prints to digital prints. Is it really too dangerous to bring my SLR to Rio? If not, what is the best way to take it around w/o screaming 'tourist' and possibly falling victim to camera thieves?

If you really want to take it, carry it in a local supermarket bag. It'll probably be okay, as long as you use it in salubrious areas in daylight.

try not to look like a tourist, to blend in... I would carry my SLR also in some sort of local supermarket bag, as I already did it in Rio...
nice trip!

If you look like a tourist you will get robbed! I carried my video and digital camera in a double plastic bag and had no problems. Just look around before you whip it out to take a photo. If you are in a crowded place shouldn't be a problem. Just take precaution.

I shouldn't have said it like that. I don't want to frighten you. RIo is a wonderful place. Like any other destination just be weary when you whip out the goods to take pictures.

Just bring it with you.
Main problem is that people are to afraid to be robbed, and with this fear look in their eyes, they are easy victims.
And just have a travel insurance that covers your camera.

An SLR camera will bring attention anywhere in the world. There are places where you can safely use it and other places were a smaller camera would call less attention.
Touristic places like Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, Red Beach are safe places to use an SLR. Very crowd places like Copacabana sidewalk you would be safer with a smaller camera.
Sometimes we go out to photograph at some touristic places.
Take a look at:

(Sorry it is in portuguese.)
What time of the year do you plan to visit here ?

And I thought that using a supermarket bag was my original idea. I am sure it won't be long now before the criminals will be targeting every plastic shopping bag. Maybe I will have to disguise my camera inside a loaf of bread. I can see me now walking down the beach in Rio with a loaf of bread hanging from my neck. Will it be cool enough in June, that I will not look like a tourist if I am wearing a windbreaker?

I took my brand new Sony Cybershot 7.2 mega pix camera and I was fine. Just be smart and dont carry it around in your hands. Have a bag or put it in your cargo shorts like I did :)

Bring your best camera and video stuff. Use these in the famous tourist spots of Rio. But don't bring it to the most unguarded places like the tunnels, crowded flea/swap/ferias markets. Always keep an eye on who are beside or following you. If you conceal these inside a plastic bag you have less chances of getting mugged. Rio's security forces are all out where tourists flock.
You're safe.
