Hey everyone!!

I'm looking into finding an apartment in Sydney. What parts or neighbourhoods or suburbs are good to live in for a young (im 21) person? Popular but not excessively expensive?? Thanks

Public transport to the city (and within a few kms of it) and most of the action is excellent, frequent and cheap so it might depend somewhat on what you like to wake up to. For example the sound of waves, lots of traffic or peace and quiet. My daughter lives in Sydney and over the years she, or many of her friends have never had a problem finding apartments quickly and appropriate to their needs. The Sydney morning Herald would be a good place to look when you arrive, and if you look at this in conjunction with a good map your problem should be solved in no time.

hey-

im a student now, but ill have finished my b.a. before i go to australia. so, while i will be working, it will likely not be particularly serious work, and living around students would be just fine.

The young crowd normally lives around universities. For areas around Sydney University, Glebe and Newtown comes to mind. Lots of public transport and cheap eats in these suburbs. And great pubs too. For areas around University of NSW, Coogee and Randwick. Coogee is a better bet because it's a beach suburb.

Another Uni is Macquarie University, but it's way out in the suburbs. You may like the leafy surrounds of Lane Cove, if that's your scene.

Anywhere near the city is expensive although cheap apartments can be found, my sister is renting at glebe and pays 250$ a week for a modest 1 bedroom flat , but most places are alot more than that , buses run back to manly from wynyard on york st if you get stuck late at night ,then ive found once im out that late i dont have to wait long for the first ferry to manly the next day anyway .Thats if thats important to you ,i lived on the north side for most of my youth and never had a problem . For rentals you should checkout www.realestate.com.au areas to avoid redfern and sth western suburbs and the outer west beyond parramatta .

Staying around students may be appropriate. Like the rest suggest near Uni Sydney, you have Glebe - there are lots of nice restaurants as well, and lots of bus into the city. I went to UNSW, but I avoided staying near Uni...too many frens will drop by - intrusion to studies!!! But Randwick, Kensington, Kingsford, Coogee, even up to Maroubra you be OK with public transport, and buses are great - they have fixed time table. I chose to stay in eastern suburb, around Elizabeth Bay and Darling Point but i think prices now maybe a bit staggering around those area. It is close to Kings cross, but very very safe. And lots of places to eat as well. When you move too far from the city centre, transport is an issue - it cost a fair bit. I never stayed around the northern suburbs - hate to think i have to rely on ferries.

The Universtiy is a good place to look for shared accomodation...
