Parish of Portland How do we combat Jamaica's negative marketing message?

Port Antonio Jamaica is such a great destination and so much more beautiful and interesting than the resort towns on the other end of the island. But Jamaica's tourism has firmly planted the island as an all-inclusive gated-resort destination where you are "safe from the locals". What a sham!

Port Antonio is the quiet side, the green side, the local side, the sustainable tourism side (not to mention the romantic non-caustic side) of Jamaica.

How do we dispel the myths of danger and peril and promote local, community-based tourism initiatives in Jamaica? How do we convey the message that Port Antonio is better tourism and better for Jamaica?

You can't. For every 1 person with a bad experience, it kills 200 good experiences.
You can only enforce the good images. By selling Sun, Fun and a Sexy Vacation, you are going to get some people that want access to Ganja and other associated experiences. Once those experiences are in the mix you open up other opportunities that become bad news 200 to 1.

Determine your market.

Who are the people who would travel to Port Antonio for a vaction?

What magazines do these people read? Advertise in these magazines.

The people who go to all-inclusive resorts are not the same people who would go to Port Antonio (and Port Antonio should be happy about this).

Have travel writers write articles on trips to Port Antonio - what to see, where to stay, how to get there from the major Jamaican airports for the American newspaper (Travel section) market.

My guess is your market would include experienced travelers who don't follow the crowd and want a unique place to visit. Play to that group.
