Safe alone? Posted: Tue March 1, 2005 09:26 PM UTC
I'm going to New Orleans this month. I am traveling alone, female in 40,s. I've read the places to avoid, but during the day plan to sight see. Is this safe, alone?

Lucky you!!!I love New Orleans. I went with my teenaged daughter a couple of years ago. Police were everywhere in the French Quarter. They were constantly saying hello to us, asking us if we were having a good time, if you stay in the Quarter, I think you are pretty safe. Maybe you want to avoid Bourbon Street at night, but just use a little common sense and I think you will be fine. Also, you will have a wonderful time.

As much as I can remember, Bourbon Street was busy, messed up and crowded, but one of the safest place because of all the people around and police presence, day and night (actually, expecially at night).
Instead, I had bad experiences in French Quarter proximity, where you start not to see too much (good/tourist) people around. I felt very unsafe close to a park near French Quarters (Louis Amstrong Garden? other tourists told us they were just assaulted indeed) and I had to turn back quickly to Bourbon Street. I felt already in the eyes of a couple of guys watching me and, with special love, my camera. It was about noon.
In general, keep open eyes, but enjoy the worderful New Orleans.

I've traveled alone to New Orleans many times. Bourbon Street, the main area at least, is safe for a woman alone both day and night. If you're traveling outside of the tourist areas, be sure and take a cab at night. I've even taken the St. Charles streetcar in the evening, but took a cab back to the hotel when it was very late. You can always ask the front desk at your hotel which streets/areas to avoid in the vicinity. Just exercise the usual caution that you would in any major city -- don't walk down dark deserted streets unnecessarily and don't be obvious with cameras, cash, jewelry, etc.

I agree with the previous post, Bourbon Street is one of the safer areas to be at night time due to the presence of so many people. Be careful though, you can turn one block off Bourbon St., at nightime, and be in a completely deserted place. That's what you want to avoid. During the day there will be people walking all over the place so you should be safe in most areas, just stick to the places you see other "decent" people walking. At night, if you have to walk, just try to stay close to other groups of people. I always meet new people in New Orleans, and you probably will too. If you feel comfortable with it, go out with other people from your hotel. Have fun in New Orleans, I always do.

You'll have a great time. Travelling alone, you'll meet more people. It's a tourist destination for people from around the world, and the locals are interesting lots. As long as you follow common sense and the previous advice posted in this and other forum postings, (and don't become intoxicated from the deceivingly sweet hurricanes and have your decision-making impaired), you should feel quite safe. Be sure to see Calvin3's suggestions on places to eat, and have a great trip!

Weighing in late but... Posted: Sat March 19, 2005 01:17 PM UTC
I went to NOLA alone several years ago. One fun thing to do is go to K-Paul's because they fill all tables. If you are alone, you will be seated with other people, which is a nice way to meet some people. I had a lovely lunch with a physician and his wife from San Francisco. And of course, the food was fabulous. It's considered kind of touristy and it's not cheap but lunch is reasonable.
Just remember it isn't open on weekends.

Just use your best judgement. We have tons of bums and and panhandlers here. Don't let them scare you. Don't walk around with big jewelry. Don't make it look like you don't know where you are. Try to walk with other people. Don't get lost. You'll be fine.......i hope :)
