Burlington Travel Forum

My Wide wants to move to Burlington ON, because her parents live nearby. I only was their once before, but don't know much about it. The info i am interested in is Culture, Price of Livivg, Outdoor Activities, Housing and weather. We are in are thirties and are ready to start on a family soon so is also a good place to bring up kids? Any info on the place would be greatly apreciated.

Though I live a few hours away, I spend a lot of time in the area (my dad lives in Burlington). Burlington is essentially a suburb community for two cities. While it is close to Hamilton, the whole area has essentially been absorbed by the GTA - greater Toronto Area - and is now a suburb of Toronto. There are no shortage of Home Depots in & around Burlington.

Hamilton is an industrial city - two large steel factories. Not much in the way of culture. Toronto on the other hand is like a mini-NYC. All kinds of restaurants, entertainment, etc. There are between 4 to 5 million people living in the GTA.

On a Sunday, the drive from Burlington to downtown Toronto is about 30-40 minutes (highway). During rush hour, add 30 minutes to that (though there are commuter trains, called GO trains which are fabulous).

Being further out than other Toronto suburbs, the cost of housing is relatively reasonable for a big city, esp. in the north part - as long as you're okay living in a new subdivision. Burlington does have a quaint, small, older area near the lake, but housing is pretty expensive there. Then there are the huge homes along the lakeshore ... if you have a million plus for a house you might be able to look there.
