| Sukhothai | need some info for sukhothai Posted: Mon February 28, 2005 05:29 AM UTC
Dear fellow VTers,
Just wonder how safe it is for a single female to travel to Sukhothai? I plan to take the night trip from Bangkok...which do you think is better train or bus? Is one whole day enough to see/appreciate the place? Could you please recommend a good guesthouse near the parks? Lastly, if you think visiting Sukhothai for a day is not a good idea...please suggest a one day activity outside Bangkok for me to try. I've seen most of Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Chiangmai in the past. Thanks a lot, Isa |

I am sure that you'll be as safe there as anywhere, but as a male it is not easy for me to place myself in your situation.
Sukothai is weel worth a visit, make sure you get a good guide or guide book as it is a large site. Regards John

Hi Isa!
Sukhothai is nice, and yes, one day is enough to see it all. It should be as safe as anywhere else in Thailand, so don't worry! I'm not sure if there are hostels around the ruins. I stayed in town, which is probably even better. You can get to the ruins in about 1/2 hour by tuk-tuk. Enjoy! Stef

Hi,
There's direct buses from BKK to Sukhothai. For trains, the nearest train station coming from BKK is Phitsanulok, next Sukhothai province. We took an hour bus ride from Phit to Sukhothai Historical Park. We visited Sukhothai Historical Park in a day, excluding all other sites in Sukhothai. From BKK, you can visit Kanchanaburi as a day-excursion. They are fairly near, i.e. about 2-2.5hours car ride. Or even a lovely Lop Buri province, 3 hours train ride from BKK....It's a small province... Hope I've answered your queries.... EC

Thanks John, Stef and Eliss! You've all been very helpful. Pity I only have limited time to see other wonderful places...who knows, I might extend my trip to a week ;0).
Eliss, Lopburi and Kanchanaburi seems to be a good option too...thanks. Will share with you my experiences when I get back. Have a nice day! Isa

Hi;
Taking a train should be a very safe option. However, most northern train will arrive in the middle of the night, so you better have a pre-arranged hotel to stay as it definitely not recommendable to hang out at train station at late hours. Alternatively, going to Karnchanaburi should be interesting. A bridge over River Kwai, and all kind of jungle treking on elephant back. Buy a tour package for a day tour should be the way to go.
