Looking for destination advice
Posted: Thu February 27, 2003 01:36 AM UTC
I am trying to plan a trip to somewhere in Mexico for the second week in June. I want to go somewhere that is not to touristy, but is friendly to non-spanish speaking americans. We would like to go deep sea fishing, do some outdoor activities (hiking etc.), enjoy cultural towns, and beaches. It needs to be inexpensive if possible. We where looking at La Paz, but are very open to any suggestions. I would love some advice from an experienced traveler...

Thanks

Julia

La Paz is a great choice, you might also want to consider cabo. I am there every year in the summer. great fishing and lots of outdoor things to do, also lots of people trying to sell you a timeshare :)) I bought one :)) but it is a great place, not much in the cultural end but you can see a lot of great things. I have tried posting my pic's but I 've had no luck. E-mail me if you need more info...

I found Tulum very nice and not built up.Fantastic beaches and just a few places to stay stretched along the coast.I imagine the fishing must be wonderful there too.I only went there for a week,,,but i dream of going back as it was the most beautiful place ive ever seen in my life.....

I second the choice for the Yucatan Peninsula... it's just a beautiful place... Tulum is a good choice! I'd also throw in Isla Holbox for a quite tourist-less visit... plus, it's a fishing town so you can take a ride in a real fishing boat for a few bucks!!! Check out my Mexico pages.

Another state worth looking at is Veracruz... it's in a tropical environment and it's coast is pretty much untouched by tourism.... it's more off-the-beaten path though so a bit of spanish will go a long way.

We were in Mexico a few years ago and did the Yucatan. We started in Merida (not touristy at all) and went to ruins at Uxmal nearby. Then Chichen Itza and then we went to near Tulum which is beautiful and not built up yet. I have not been to other areas of Mexico. You can get cheap flights to Cancun airport, but I am not a big fan of big resort areas like Cancun itself. Have fun,

Victoria

I went on a trip similar to Victoria's but started in Cancun. You could visit nearby ruins & parks at Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza, but I would recommend HIGHLY that you spend 2 or 3 days on Isla Mujeres for sunning, exploring and snorkeling/fishing. It's a quick 20 min. ferry ride from Cancun and one of my favorite places on earth. Have a great time!
