We were in Puno in July 2003. Got off the bus and the taxi guy took us to a place. The guy took us to one of the Lonely Planet hotels. Good decent hotel ($50) with private bath etc. Forget the name. They know that we all read guidebooks. So, they pretty much have all the hotel cards in their pocket. If you throw me names I can try to recollect. Regardless, Peru has the most "on-the-fly" accomodations I have seen. I am not suggesting you "wing" it out but worst case you should be cool unless you are going during some festival season.
