Day trip to Kyoto?

I have friends visiting Tokyo and they want to know whether they could go to Kyoto on a day trip. Would the bullet train schedule allow them to spend all day there & make it back to Tokyo same night?

I don't think you can do it on a day trip as the single journey already consumed you at least 2 hrs 37 mins. And from one place to another in Kyoto, you may need to take either bus or walk, allow at least 30 mins for the bus journey.

i took a day trip by shinkansen to kyoto and it is possible but i didnt feel like i got the best impression of the city. by the time id been up the tower, walked to a castle, park and temple then gone to gion district it was time to start heading home. if your friends have a few certain things they want to see, they should be able to do it in a day, but basically its better to stay overnight.
