what islands to visit
Posted: Mon February 21, 2005 09:19 PM UTC
Hello, I am planning a trip with my husband to greece in june. I am lost and don´t know what to do. We definitely go to athens for about 4 days and then to the islands. We would like to visit islands with history, archeological sites, but also with interesting night life. To conclude the trip, we would like to go to an island with nice beaches to rest. Any advise? We have about 10 days to do all this. Thank you for your help

Rhodes and Kos are two Islands I could personally recommend: history, beach and nigthlife! ...but now I have to admit I haven't seen so many of those beautiful greek islands!

In June of 2002 my husband and I visited Athens for 3 days and then went to Naxos for 3 days, then Santorini for 3 days. Our favorite place was Naxos. It was not very crowded and you could stay for very cheap. The beaches are wonderful. There's also snorkeling & hiking to be done on Naxos. People are very friendly. We also took a boat trip to Paros one day - another beautiful island. Santorini was nice too. From what I understand, it's pretty hard to go wrong in the Greek Islands! Have a great trip!

I haven't visited so many islands either, but I have to say that like the previous poster, Kos and Rhodes both seem to fit the bill... I've heard that Corfu is great too...

Here's another vote for Santorini and Naxos. The thing is that, if you ask ten people which islands to visit, you'll probably get ten different answers. I recommend that you read as much as possible about the islands and then decide for yourself. Here are some excellent web sites to get you started:

http://www.islandstrolling.com/info/english/links_to_greece.htm

Wherever you go, resist the temptation to cram too many islands into the six days you have available. I would recommend no more than two islands in that time. Otherwise you will spend too much time traveling and not enough time enjoying the islands.

I am living in Greece at the moment. If I were you I would not spend 4 full days in Athens. You will manage to see the sights of Athens in less time as well (it will be very hot in Athens at that time of the year + it's not such a beautiful city like some other European capitals) and the islands are much more fun!

About the islands:
Santorini is extremely beautiful and also Greeks like to go there.
Mykonos is another island worth visiting for its beauty (might be a bit expensive).
Creete has a lot of history but I think tourism has spoilt the place (I had the most impolite service ever in Creete and did not really enjoy myself there). Out of the well known islands I actually preferred Kos to Creete.
I have also been to Naxos and really enjoyed my time there.
