Hi! Congrats on finally coming down this way!

You are going to need Reais. It is kind of a pain to exchange currency down here but is possible. If you have an ATM with the visa or mastercard symbol (check card) you can take out money from the atms here. It's quite nice actually. Go during the day to an ATM in a good area and then you take out a bunch of money for the next couple of days. The exchange rate isn't bad this way. As for shopping, you can use your credit cards. If I were you I'd take at least R$50 with you so you have something that first day (for taxis or a snack or something).

Good luck with your trip! Please let me know if you have any questions at all!

Rachel

You can use your ATM card in larger cities, however you may have to go to several machines to find one that works with your card. Even machines that claimed to use the network listed on my card (Cirrus, Plus, etc.) didn't always work. The best place to get cash is at the airport when you arrive, or whenever you are in a larger city. No doubt bigger tourist areas (Igauzu) will have ATMs as well. Credit cards work, of course, however some smaller places and even discount airlines won't take out of country credit cards. Have heard warnings of restaurants, shops, etc. swiping cards twice (you won't find out until you're home and good luck fixing that by then), so that's something to keep in mind. U.S. money is always handy to have, the exchange rates seemed to be fair. If you realize that your money goes three times as far in Brazil, taking out your daily ATM max will buy a lot of food and souvenirs....

I agree, I suggest strongly to bring cash in REAIS
hte brazliana currency. As a tourist, I have travel
a lot of brazilian cities and reccomend this,
Imagine to pay a souvenir o another interesting thing with credit card...
Bring cash was the better for me , but I was w a credit card too, i suggest to stay with some dollar bills and
reais, when you stay in Rio, change your us bills x reais go to universal cambio ,a good rate...
more South you travel you get less reais per dollar
I have test it!!!.
ATM in certain cities may be a problem to find...have you think this??
good luck

Yes, you should carry cash when you are here. You won't be able to buy nearly as much as you can at home with credit card here. And before you go to small cities, take out some cash in Rio for that trip. Carry your important stuff with you on the buses to those places. In Buzios you'll be able to use your credit cards at restaurants and stores. It's the beach and street shopping where you'll want cash. Make sure you double check what credit cards the restaurants take (in all cities) because you will occasionally run into one that only takes mastercard or no card.

Have fun! (I know you will!)

Do not bring any Reails (reals) here you can exchange at many tourist agencies ,your ATM card works also best at 24 HORAS cash machines which are at many shopping centres petrol statins and street corners.
I am here in Brazil now ,very hot today earlier I used my Barclays card to take out R$100 that will last me till monday.
