Koblenz Getting to Klobenz
Posted: Mon February 21, 2005 09:30 PM UTC
Hi,

I will be visiting Klobenz in a few weeks and my flight will be arriving in Frankfurt International airport. I was wondering if someone can help me find the best way to get to Klobenz from Franfurt Intl Airport, instead of renting a car and drive there myself. Would I have to take a train, bus or taxi? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmmmn, it looks to me that you should be able to take the train from the airport to Koblenz. I will be honest and admit that I have not done this. However. first look st http://www1.frankfurt-airport.com/cms/default/rubrik/3/3405.frankfurt_airport_en.htm which is the website for the airport in Frankfurt.

Then look at www.bahn.de, and enter "frankfurtairport" for the start and "koblenz" as the destination, and you should see that there are many trains from Frankfurt to Koblenz. My problem is that there are two stations listed at the airport: "Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Regionalbf " and "Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf ", and I haven't found yet the difference...hopefully, someone will chime in to tell us which to take (or both ;-) ).

In any case, the trip should be a little more than one hour...

As mentioned above you can take a train from Frankfurt Airport to Koblenz. The trains depart from "Fernbahnhof" where the long distance trains depart.

The "Regionalbahnhof" is for suburban trains and regional trains.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: FRA (for Frankfurt Airport train stations)
To: Koblenz

Regionalbahnhof (tracks 1-3) is in the basement of Terminal 1. The Fernbahnhof (Fernbf) is an buidling adjacent to Terminal 1. Just follow the signs at the airport.

No bus. And as the distance is approx. 120 km a taxi would be really expensive.

Thank you, Bernd and abalada, for the update. Although I am not the one going to Koblenz, I am curious about the two trains. The regional train is cheaper (usually 17.60 euros versus 21 euros) but takes longer (usually 1.5 hours versus 1.2 hours).

Are there any other factors to consider in choosing which train to take, or is there not a lot of difference?

The regional ones stop at more small towns along the Rhine. A pretty journey all in all and you see a lot of the Loreley area and the Pfalz castle in the middle of the river etc. The regional trains are sometimes double deckers on this line which is always nice for good views.

You see the towns from the faster trains too but more in a rush. As for comfort, I think both trains are decent but of course the regional ones could sometimes be really old compared to the always nice high speed ones.

Koblenz Re: Getting to Klobenz - by boat

KD operates boats from Mainz (not far from the airport) to Koblenz. You can of course take the boat only for a part of the route. With the Winter timetable you have no other choice anyway:
http://www.k-d.com/engl/ereignisfahrten/o_1.html
Low season starts end of March. High season end of April.
Bingen, St. Goar and Boppard are also stops on the railway line from (Frankfurt Airport - ) Mainz - Koblenz. The other places are stops on the railway line on the opposite side of the river.

You can even buy a combined railway/KD boat ticket. Gives even 20% discount for the KD boat ticket.
