Lubumbashi Job in Lubumbashi
Posted: Sat February 19, 2005 11:20 AM UTC
I have been asked to head a project for cobalt processing plant in Katanga. I would be expected to operate out of Lubumbashi. I am 30, married and have a 2 year old daughter.

Request if you could provide some information on life in Lubumbashi, write-ups or pictures or site reference to help me make up my mind.

How is the security situation in and around the town?
The money and benefits are good but is it worth taking the risk of operating in this part of Congo?

Though I have heard that situation is fast improving and the country is trying to rebuild itself.

Do you will work for the Forest Group?

Here is another good site but inchi-yetu is very good!: http://www.lubumbashi.be/

The situation in Lubumbashi is better than every where in the Congo.

Lubumbashi is the 2nd important city of Congo. Important city for the administration of the production of cobalt, zinc and coper.

The president is originary from the North of Katanga. Lubumbashi has no problem of rebellion nor of war.

If you want to play tennis go to the "Cercle Kilima".

They speak Swahili and French.

You have a map of the city either on inch-yetu or on lubumbashi.be (see in Photos menu and then under "Ville" button, you have "aérienne").

It's a good city to live in. It is quiet.

When do you arrive there?

If you go to the "Cercle Kilima" say to the Tennis Teacher "Mulolo" that Robert De Mûelenaere will come back but doesn't know when and give him my salutations.

I ask myself if there is water in the swimming pool...

Bye.

I have just returned from Lubumbashi. That was my second visit to L'shi. As Aftrican cities go it is relitively safe. There are hassles but that's Africa. The Traffic Police (yellow guys) are a pain as they can stop you at any time for anything. It usually is resolved whtn money changes hands. If you can speak French, Lingala or Swahili it will help alot. My son lives in the area called "Golf". Rents are high as the mine people and UN people move in they are willing to pay anything so rent will be high. (They made it that way) There are some nice restuarants and hotels but not alot else to do. Travel is difficult and getting into Zambia is time consuming and espensive. Roads are horrendous (but there is not much of anywhere to go anyway) It is a quiet city, but utilities like water and electricity are sporatic. On one day off the next.. Sometimes there is a system to it but othertimes not.

We have started an NGO operating in L'shi so I plan many more trips there. I always look forward to going and am sorry when I have to leave. But then I love Africa!
