| Utrecht | Mass in Utrecht Posted: Thu February 24, 2005 12:38 AM UTC
My daughter & I want to attend a Mass in the Domkerk on the Sunday we will be in Netherlands. Is this still a functioning Catholic church? If so, what are the Mass times. We had considered attending Mass at St. Jans in den Bosch, but there may be a timing problem for other things we have planned for Sunday.

Actually, the Domkerk in Utrecht is not a catholic church but a protestant one, since the 16th century.
If you want to know more about church services, e-mail to secretariaat@domkerk.nl

That is very dissapointing to know. Are any of the beautiful old churches in Holland still Catholic or all protestant? From what I understand when they were 'reformed' the art work were all destroyed and most of the beauty was taken away except the actual buildings.

There are two catholic churches in the centre of Utrecht, the Catharinakerk and the Augustinuskerk.
The Catharinakerk is situated close to the Dom, an was build in the 16th century. Since it is the home church of the archbishop of the Netherlands it is called a cathedral. There is a mass every sunday at 10.30 See : http://www.dekathedraal.com/ The Augustinuskerk is situated on "de oude gracht", the main canal in the centre of Utrecht. The church is fairly new ( 160 years old). On the sunday there are three masses, 9:00, 10:30 and 12:30 . The 12:30 mass is in English. See : http://www.deaugustinus.com/

Not all of the old churches are protestant but most of them are. Especially north of 'the rivers' as we call it (Maas and Waal).
But they can be visited although no mass takes place. 's Hertogenbosch is still your best choice, it being one of the finest churches in The Netherlands.

btw...it's only an hour by train from Amsterdam to Den Bosch (you were staying in Amsterdam, no?). And on a Sunday morning there are direct trains twice an hour from 7.30 am on.
Check www.ns.nl and click English top right for train schedules. When you use the Travel Planner, type Amsterdam Centraal in the departure box and Hertogenbosch in the arrival box (Den Bosch is not an official name).

We are staying the whole time in Utrecht and travelling out from there each day.
It seemed a better choice (and less expensive than Amsterdam). Thanks for all of the church information everyone. We may try the mass at St. Jan's in s-Hertogenbosch, if we can schedule it around other events we will try on Sunday. It is not that I am very religious, but I would like to experience the service in such an old church. We can't do that here in the states.
