I have one day in port at Naples. I was planning on taking the train to Pompeii to see thr ruins, then taking a boat to Capri and then a bpat to Naples. You think that's do-able in 8 hours?

No.
If you check the time schedules you won't of what it takes to do just Pompeii or what it takes to do just Capri you will see it is pretty tough. How long are you going to check out Pompeii. There is a lot of stuff and the town is pretty big. The tours generally take at least two hours. Also, when I checked, sometimes the sea is to rough for the crossing to Capri. Karl

hi
It is absolutely impossible! U will need at least 2 hours in Pompeii but u have to see everything on the run(3-4 hours for normal visit of ruins). And I believe, it takes about an hour to get to Capri from Naples. So u will have just enough time to make photo in central square and get back to boat:)))))) Better choose only one of the places. You can only do one of the two. I would suggest Pompei and Ercolano. However, Naples is a wonderful place and often overlooked - you might consider poking around the archeological museum - where are the treasures from Pompei are housed as well as the underground tour of the ROman and Greek aqueducts under the city etc..Not to mention stuffing your mouth with pizza and Neopolitan pastries..
