| Bronx | a safe area Posted: Wed February 16, 2005 09:23 AM UTC
Hi. Would anyone know if East 182nd Street is a safe area? I noticed most everyone had bars on the doors and windows, but whenever I visited, 2 people who live there told me that they never encountered any problems. Anyone know for sure? There's St. Barnabus hosp. on one corner; a school on the other and a senior citizen complex across the street, and a day care center on the other side of the house.

Anyone who is intelligent has bars/gates on a first floor window and fire escapes windows in NYC. Most people have bars/window gates on their fire escape windows. That's the norm.
Secondly, what do you consider "safe"? Waiting for a bus at 8 AM on a weekday? Walking alone at 3 Am after a night of clubbing? I lived not far from there. I have mixed feelings about it, personally. I don't think I'd want to live there but if I had to, I wouldn't get too bend out of shape about it. It's a working-class/lower-income in the Bronx. If you are not used to this or of being around mainly Blacks, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans, then you may feel odd. For a single woman it may not be a great idea to go gallovanting around at 2 AM but thena again, I lived in the next neighborhood over and I am a single female and walked home late at night or to buy ice cream at 2 AM.

Thanks for your honest reply. After considering the pros and cons, I decided to go for it. After all, I grew up in Union City, and believe it or not, I find this area much quieter. As a matter of fact, I consider it safer than where I presently live, which is Belleville, New Jersey. I'm the only white person in my complex too! So my dream of being a New Yorker is finally going to come true!

Hi,
Happened upon your board looking for info. about Kingsbridge. I am considering applying for an apartment at E. 190th, near Grand Concourse. Do you have any new perspectives since moving in? (I presently live in East Harlem where I am comofortable being a minority.) Thanks for any input.
