| Huangshan | I am terrified of having to walk on narrow paths by steep cliffs Posted: Sat February 19, 2005 12:16 AM UTC
We will be visiting Huangshan in Aug. IMy tour will take us from Cloud valley temple to White goose peak by cable car. Stay overnight at the Beihai Hotel. The next morning, we will take the cable car from Jade screen to Mercy Pavillion.
Could anyone tell me if this involve some sorts of walking on narrow paths by sheer cliffs? I am OK with height on a cable car (enclosed), but I can't see myself walking next to a big drop and I saw some scary pictures of Huangshan. I am willing to skip the west side of Huangshan if necessary - please advise. |

Why not ask your tour oeprator? After all, they are taking you there so should know what is involved.

Yes, the section from Beihai to the Jade Screen Peak involes some steep cliffs. You will have to climb up through a steps of ladder chiseled on the granite mountain ridge. If you really want to avoid this section, there're two options: 1) go back to the White Goose peak and take the same cable car back. 2) go up to the Danxia Peak and take the cable car to the front entrance of the Huangshan Mountain (the north entrance of Huangshan, from here you can visit the Taiping Lake or go to the Buddhist Jiuhua Mountain).

Maxim-China,
Thanks so much for your detailed advice. I am sure I'll miss the best/most scenic part of Huangshan, but I rather be on the safe side. By the way, has there been incidences of people falling off the cliffs to their death? Looking at my map , I can't seem to find Danxia Peak. Did you mean Cloud-dispelling pavillion? I prefer the 2nd option , at least I get to see something else that way.

i did huangshan in november. it's not scary at all. note: i have no experience with climbing and i'm completely unathletic. there are stairs cut into the mountains. if you can climb narrow stairs you'll be fine. i didn't experience any precarious edges or cliffs. i was just tired.

There are more than 70 over peaks in HuangShan. The view up there is magnificient. To tell you the path in not steep and narrow is a lie. There are some steps that hug close to the cliff face on one side and the other side, although with some safety handrail erected, can be a bit dangerous if you really lose your balance. But not to worry. If you take extra care and make firm steps, you will be alright. I do have some degree of height phobia but I took it alright. Its still not that bad.
I was up there in December and there were not much people. Although it was a bit cold with some steps partially covered with frosted ice, I think the timing was good. At least there were no crowd to make the steps and path more scary. I can enjoy a slow walk without rubbing shoulders with people most of the time. And I think the park rangers did a good job in making most of the path/steps safe and clear of ice or other foreign obstacles. It's worth the visit!
