Could anybody(especially those who lives in Beijin) help?
Posted: Mon February 14, 2005 02:40 PM UTC
Dear VT friends,
Alastair - the English guy who has cycled around the world so far:

50,000 miles
50 countries
5 continents
5 years
to support "Hope & Homes for Children"(Charity).
(please check his homepage for more information:
http://www.roundtheworldbybike.com/ )

Now arrived Japan. He will reach Beijin, China by march. He will ride across north China to mid-east. Who knows how far is it from Beijin to Wurumuchi(Xinjian) by bicycle? And what is the best route to do this? He has only two months for his visa in China. Can anybody provide any information about the route for bicycle, and further more, anybody lives in Beijin or along the bike route can provide him accommodations and clean shower and will be great with food - he is in a very small budget to do this great job!!! Also if anybody knows the media or publisher or schools which can provide him an interview or speech chance, please give your help, thanks.

You can contact me or directly to him if you can be helpful to support or sponsor any part of his bike journey in China. ( Dalian-Beijin-Wurumuchi...)
His email: roundtheworldbybike@hotmail.com

Thanks!
Joanna

Cycling on the Silk Road?

Where is he going after Urumqi? Kyrgyzstan? Pakistan? Kazakhstan?
The further west he goes in China, the more problems he will encounter. Dalian to Beijing is easy. Beijing to Urumqi will be difficult on his small budget and the terrain is terrible for bicycles. How long will he stay in Beijing?
The easiest route would be Highway 109 from Beijing to Lanzhou (Gansu province) and then Highway 312 to Urumqi.
You can tell him to get more information about cycling in China at www.bikechina.com

Thanks a lot for the information! I think he will go to Kazakhstan after China, and he will bike through afghan - that's all what I know. He will stay in Beijin maybe for one week to 10 days. I have never been to silkroad before, do you think it's possible for him to beat that long distance with a speed of 100km/day in 2 months? Which cities should he pass by? And where can he download an good English map of China suitable for the bike journey?
He got his visa for China in Tokyo China Embassy but they only offer him one month to stay. He can extend another month inside China, but is that possible for him to get a 3 months visa?
Thanks a lot!

Cycling on the Silk Road?

Afghanistan? There are one or two other countries between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a huge detour if his final destination is Europe. How will he leave Afghanistan if he enters from Uzbekistan? I think you need to check his route again.
10 days in Beijing is too long if he only has 2 months in China. If he's starting in Dalian then he'll need about one week to reach Beijing. He must keep in mind that once he leaves Beijing city limits then the mountainous terrain begins, so distances as seen on some maps can be deceiving.
Highway 110 to Lanzhou is probably easier to navigate on a bicycle. That route will take him through Inner Mongolia where there is much more flat land.
The problem he will encounter on Highway 312 after Lanzhou is long stretches of road with no towns as he goes through the desert areas.
He can buy a good China road atlas in Dalian as he embarks on his trip. They are cheap and yet very valuable. Forget the idea of downloading China road maps from the Internet. I guarantee you won't find any good ones.
Good luck trying to help this guy!
Best wishes,
Confucius
