Where to stay in Kerry: Derrynane or Dingle?
Posted: Wed February 9, 2005 10:07 PM UTC
We will spend three days in Kerry in mid June and are trying to decide where to stay . We are thinking of either the Derrynane area or Dingle. We have three kids 8, 5, and 3. Also, could we see both the Ring of Kerry and the DIngle Peninsula in a three day period? Thanks.

In my opinion, Dingle is a destination for a day trip rather than a place to stay. We stayed in Tralee, which was more centrally located.

You can do Dingle if you get there early enough. We got there kind of mid day and the kids wanted to shop and hang around. Later in the day we went down to Kilorglin for the Puck Festival.

You can also do the Ring of Kerry from Tralee in one day.

That gives you a day to see say Adare and maybe Limerick.

I'd go for Dingle. It's packed in summer but I guess that's all part of the fun. The kids will love a boat trip to see the dolphin and you will enjoy the many nice pubs I guess ;)

You can easily spend two days on Dingle Peninsula and one is enough to drive around the Ring of Kerry I think.

Enjoy! Wish I could go, too.

Hi,
In June both should be good to stay, not too busy yet. From Derrynane you could easier include the sites around the Kerry Ring, like Valentia island, maybe even a boat trip to the Skelligs (only with good weather, especially when travelling with smaller kids!) or the Beara peninsula near Kenmare.

have a great trip!

I would personally pick Dingle. The kids would like Fungi the Dolphin, and Dingle is such a busy little town with lots of shops, pubs, and very good restaurants. Two nights in Dingle would give you lots of time to discover the whole peninsula. Slea Head Drive takes about a half day, then Inch Beach also a half day. The boat tour to see Fungi about the same.

We stayed two nights in Dingle and a night in Milltown at the Kilburn House B&B between Killorglin and Caltlemaine. It was a perfect central location. You could stay there for three to four nights and be close to Dingle, Iveragh and Beara peninsulas. The Kilburn House is a nice place for a family. They also have three children 2, 5 and 8. Podge and Gret Leane, email info@stayatkilburn.com or Tel. 066-9767364. Great view and excellent breakfast. Farmhouse....envirement, off main rd. safe for kids.

Have a great time...I just go back. June is a nice time. But more tourist start at that time.
