| Norfolk (County) | how much is the bike? Posted: Tue February 8, 2005 10:45 AM UTC
hi,
seems I`ll have certain troubles with getting around Norwich & South Norfolk so the bike is going to be the best transport mean. I`m considering the move of my current bike to UK and the purchase of another one on-site. So: How much are the bikes in Norfolk? I need nothing special, ordinary trekking (or tourer or how do you call it), need not be new too, second-hand is ok as well. Where to find bike shop in Norwich? (event. having web site). Are the helmets oligatory? thanks |

just a tip marek.
if you are planning to cycle in england you should read some of the books by english bicycle traveller Josie Dew. she wrote several books about her bicycle travels, one of them about her travels in great britain. www.josiedew.co.uk

A bike sounds like a good idea, Norfolk is quite a flat area. I do not know Norwich so I hope someone else can give you the name of a good independent bike shop.
It is possible to buy a decent new road bike in the UK for about £200-£250. And then from there the sky's the limit for prices :-) You are not required to wear a helmet here. Obviously if you are dojng a lot of cycling on busy roads then a helmet would be an excellent idea! Britain is a country in love with its car and cycling is not popular yet - I think 2% of journeys are made by bicycle. However, it is different for some cities - Cambridge and Oxford for example (and maybe Norwich too) do a lot of things to make cycling easy and safe. Also, there is a big market in Britain for 'mountain bikes', which are very expensive and not very good for day-to-day cycling. So it can be difficult sometimes to find a second-hand 'normal' road bike. But good luck anyway!!

http://www.pedalrevolution.com/
is a bike shop in Norwich. It should also give you a good indication of price. You could also try www.wheelies.co.uk From experience of trying to buy a bike in Norwich is that most shops offer the manufacturers recommended price. So if you can find the manuf.'s website, then the price you'd pay wouldn't be far off. Helmets aren't obligatory but recommended. s3

Hi
I hope you enjoy your time at Lotus. My husband works there. One thing about cycling, especially in the country - beware as like somebody else said, we like our cars and especially around Hethel where everybody thinks they are racing drivers! best wishes

I bought my bike from pedal revolution, and its fine (£250), but its not that cheap a shop. There is a national chain called Halfords in town that has very cheap (and very low quality) bikes, around £100. There is a second hand bike shop on portersfield road, bikes from £50
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=621525& dunno if that link will work ... its between earlham and unthank roads. There is a bike shop on Nelson Street (opposite the Fat Cat pub, famous for its real ales and won best pub in Britain twice). For really cheap bikes, the university has occasional auctions of bikes left there, see the union web site.
