Can anyone advise on these caves (also known as Gruta de las Maravillas) and if they are worth the detour when we will be driving from Huelva to Seville in June. Your recommendations would much appreciated.

I have to say that I´ve not yet been to these caves, but from what I have read and seen in photographs they are spectacular. Driving from Huelva to Sevilla is straighforward on the motorway, it would take 90 minutes. To go via Aracena the roads are not so good. I would allow 3 hours or a little more, plus time to visit the caves. If you have time on your hands I would recommend it.

I did the detour and never regretted it: wonderful. The visit takes about 30 minutes and you go through different "halls" or "rooms". There is music (that was composed especially for the caves) and lights along the way.
I particularly remember one of the "pools" with the clearest water I've ever seen... that and the calming music: I would have jumped in there and float about the caves for a while. Since you go to the area, you could also visit one of the "Jabugo or Iberico" pig farms and try the local delicatessen: mountain cured ham. Yummy!

You have convinced me Susana, with the talk of Jamon :0)
Actually we are going to Cadiz this weekend for Carnival, but I think Aracena is a little far off our route. Will certainly consider visiting on our next trip to Portugal though. Stace :0)

Lucky you! I love Cadiz, and would love to go for Carnival. Have a glass of Barbadillo for me.
Have a good time! Susana
