We are going to be in Curitiba for a week. Besides the basic bus tour and the train ride to the coast, what is there to do in Curitiba? We are interested in hiking and other activities that English speakers would enjoy.

I would recommend a tour of the Lagamar area, on coast. Itīs an envoiromental protection area part of Unescoīs Biosphere Reserve of the Atlantic Rainforest. A friend recommended it to me and I went last December. You can trek in the rainforest, visit mangroves and deserted beaches by small boats, canoeing, go bird watching or fishing with the locals. It was great.
The difficulty in access the right places is the main problem, so should consider to join an organised tour. I did it with Brazil Ecojourneys, starting from Curitiba (I think tyou can start from Paranagua or after the train in Morretes too). I think itīs not in their website yet (www.brazilecojourneys.com) but they will send you the itinerary by email and you can book that way or by phone. Donīt miss it, you wonīt see many tourists there, but this is the most remote and beautiful part of Brazil I have visited.

Take a day tour to Vilha Vela to see the rock formations. Pretty cool.
Learn a bit of Portuguese, too; I spent three weeks there; everyone was very nice, but there weren't as many English speakers as one would hope to find. Check out my Curitiba page; also, email VT member "LBiscaia"--she's a great host and very helpful with any questions you might have (and speaks excellent English!) Enjoy!

Hi!
I would recommend a trip to Ilha do Mel - Honey Island. It is one of my favourite places here. Check the site: www.pousadadasmeninas.com.br There you will get some information and pictures from the Island. I always stay in this nice and cozy inn (pousada). The owner, Suzi is a great host and she can "communicate" in English. She is used to host people from Germany, England, France and many other countries. There are wonderful beaches - until April the water is really warm. You can hike around the Island, take boat trips to other nearby Islands - I was there 2 weeks ago and saw many dolphins..! The seafood is excellent - the caipirinhas are GOOD! :) From Curitiba to Pontal do Sul - the place from where the boat to the Island leaves - it lasts 2 hours by bus, then 40 minutes to cross the Bay and get there. Cars are not allowed in the Island. Hope you go..and hope you like! Cheers Luciana
