| Haarlem | Good place to eat breakfast Posted: Sun February 6, 2005 08:10 PM UTC
We will be in Haarlem for a few hours on a weekday morning (eearly) before going in to A'dam for the rest of the day. Is there a pleasant place to have breakfast near the great Church on the markt? We want to see as much of the area as possible so we wish to eat in the old market area.
Also, is it far from the train to the Grote Markt? thanks |

Marcel, you beat me right to it :-)
Indeed, just a short walk. Keep more or less a straight line from the train station to Grote Markt. I am just reminded btw, how lovely that old train station is!

Thank you Marcel & ATLC. The main reason I want to see the Grote Church in Haarlem is beacuse there is a fantastic painting in the Philadelphia Museum of Art that I have been crazy about since I first saw it there 35 years ago. It shows some local gentlemen in the church and it looks enormous. I don't remember the artist name. I will have to look it up.

Your interest in the Grote Kerk in Haarlem...
then you would also be interested in the St. John in 's Hertogenbosch (also known as Den Bosch). It is a church of truly French cathedralic stature. Unfortunately I have no page of that yet (nor of Haarlem). There's another great church in Gouda (known best for its cheese trade and syrup waffles). St. John in Gouda houses one of the greatest collections of stained glass in Europe. And one of the best guides I ever encountered, tot tell you about them. The church is over 100 metres long. If you like, have a look at my Gouda page.

We are planning to see the church in den Bosch. It is a priority, and Gouda and Maastricht and Delft! We are alos planning to day trip to Cologne to see THE CATHEDRAL! Lots of church architecture to see in Europe, and so little time (& money!)

When you go to the church in Gouda, insist on having the church verger as your guide. His name is Maurice. Tell him I sent you (refer to the Welsh TV crew visit).

Thanks. I will try to remember that. I'll put in my travel notes for Gouda.
I have found out who the artist is who did the painting I referred to above. His name is Pieter Jansz. Saenredam. He was active in Haarlem & Utrecht in the early 17th century. Is he well known?

AIn't got a clue, John!
There were so many Dutch masters...seems his work is pretty well spread over museums across the world. http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/saenredam_pieter_jansz.html
